Governor Kathleen Sebelius
was recently invited to testify before the United States Congress
Joint Economic Committee on the benefits of early childhood
education.
The 2007 legislative session
brought success on several policies and programs that will
work to give Kansas children the skills to be successful when
they enter school.
• • • WHAT IS SCHOOL READINESS?
School readiness requires more than just knowing letters and numbers.
A child must be healthy. Prepared to sit in a class and listen to
instructions. To cooperate with peers. And be curious. WHY IS SCHOOL
READINESS IMPORTANT?
We know that those who start school behind tend to stay behind.
By preparing children to enter school ready to learn, we are priming
them for success in school and beyond. So much depends on the capabilities
of our children. Some day, after all, they’ll be in charge. HOW
CAN I HELP KANSAS CHILDREN PREPARE FOR SCHOOL?
Improved early childhood policies could affect as many 230,000 Kansas
children birth through age five. Become educated about the issues
of importance to you, then make your thoughts known to those who
